Microphone feedback — that sudden howl or squeal — happens when your mic picks up sound from the speaker, amplifies it, and plays it back through the same speaker, over and over, until the loop builds into an ear-piercing tone. The good news: it is almost always fixable in seconds once you understand the loop. The fixes below work the same whether you are using a wearable voice amplifier, a portable PA system, or a karaoke speaker. What causes microphone feedback?
Feedback is a loop, not a fault in your equipment. Sound leaves the speaker, the microphone hears it, the amplifier makes it louder, and it leaves the speaker again — slightly louder each pass. When the sound returning to the mic is as loud as (or louder than) the original, the loop “runs away” and self-oscillates at whatever frequency the room and gear favour, which is the howl you hear. Anything that raises the volume of sound getting back into the mic makes it worse. The usual culprits:
- The microphone is too close to, or pointed at, the speaker.
- The volume or mic gain is set too high for the room.
- The mic is held too far from your mouth, so you crank the gain to compensate.
- You are cupping your hand around the mic head, which destroys its directional pattern.
- The room has hard, reflective surfaces bouncing sound straight back into the mic.
The core principle: stop the speaker's output from reaching the mic at high volume. Every fix below does one of two things — move sound away from the mic, or let you run lower gain for the same loudness.
How to stop microphone feedback: 6 fixes
1. Move the mic away from — and behind — the speaker
Feedback needs the mic to “hear” the speaker, so break that line of sound. Position your speaker in front of you, aimed at the audience, with the microphone behind the speaker's coverage — never in front of it, and never pointed at it. With a wearable amplifier worn on your belt, keep the speaker facing outward, away from where the headset mic sits. This one change resolves the majority of feedback problems on its own.
2. Turn down the volume or mic gain
Feedback begins the instant the loop's volume crosses a threshold, so drop below it: lower the master volume, the mic gain, or both, one notch at a time until the howl stops. If the result is too quiet, do not crank it back up — fix the mic distance instead (next step), which gives you loudness without the feedback risk.
3. Hold or wear the mic closer to your mouth
This is the single most effective fix, and the most overlooked. Sound from a source close to the mic is dramatically louder to that mic than sound from across the room, so the closer the mic is to your mouth, the less gain you need — and lower gain means far less feedback. A headset or lavalier mic sitting 2–3 cm from your mouth is ideal because it holds that close distance automatically, even as you move and turn.
4. Use a directional mic — and never cup the head
A directional (cardioid) microphone rejects sound coming from behind it, so you can aim its “dead” rear toward the speaker. Just as important: keep your hand off the grille. Cupping your palm around a mic's head — common in karaoke — collapses its directional pattern and turns even a good mic into a feedback machine. Hold the mic by its body, not its head.
5. Use anti-feedback DSP or notch out the howl
Many modern amplifiers include anti-feedback (anti-howling) DSP that detects the runaway frequency and suppresses it automatically — the simplest option if you keep hitting feedback. If your system has an equaliser, you can “ring out” the room manually: slowly raise the gain until it just begins to ring, note the frequency, cut it on the EQ, then repeat. This raises how loud you can go before feedback returns.
6. Tame the room, or move within it
Hard walls, glass, low ceilings and corners reflect sound straight back into the mic. Step away from reflective surfaces and out of corners, and add soft furnishings if you can. In a genuinely bad room, lean harder on fixes 2 and 3 — lower gain plus a close mic — because you cannot out-volume a reflective space.
Emergency fix: when it starts howling mid-event
If feedback erupts while you are live, do this in order, quickly and calmly:
- Pull the master volume down a notch or two — this kills the howl instantly.
- Step so the speaker is in front of you, not beside or behind, moving the mic out of its output.
- Check your grip — uncup the mic head and bring it closer to your mouth.
- Bring the volume back up gradually to a level just below where it rang.
